The Invisible Shape of Me

There are certain things we're taught belong to the shape of womanhood.

The fresh manicure. The makeup bag. The closet. The shoes. The ritual of getting dressed and catching yourself in the mirror, pleased by what you've assembled.

I never really had that thing.

I've enjoyed some of those things, sure. But none of them ever gave me that feeling...The one I have watched other women get from a fresh set of nails or the perfect pair of shoes. That little internal mmm. That pleasure of feeling especially, deliciously like a woman.

For a long time, I don't think I realized I was missing anything.

Then there was scent.

And strangely, the thing that makes me feel most embodied has no shape at all.

Something happens when I find a fragrance that truly resonates with me. Not one that simply smells good. Not one I'm told is beautiful or that everyone else seems to be wearing. I mean the rare one that settles onto my skin and makes something inside me respond.

Oh. There you are.

There is such an intimate pleasure in that recognition.

Maybe that's what I love most about fragrance. It isn't necessarily about becoming prettier. It isn't about completing an outfit or making myself more presentable. Nobody even has to see it.

Scent is invisible.

It lives close to the skin. It warms there. Changes there. Trails behind you without asking to be noticed. Someone may catch it when you walk past, when you lean in for a hug, when the wind moves just right. But before it ever belongs to anyone else's experience of me, it belongs to mine.

Maybe that's why fragrance feels so feminine to me.

Not because women are supposed to smell beautiful, but because my femininity has never felt particularly performative. I don't necessarily need to look at myself and think, There she is.

Sometimes I want to feel her.

And scent does that.

“Perhaps a life takes its truest shape in those small moments of recognition.”

A beautiful fragrance can make an ordinary Tuesday feel different. I can be wearing the same clothes I've worn a hundred times, hair doing whatever it decided to do that morning, nothing especially remarkable happening—and then I catch my own fragrance.

And there I am.

There is something delicious about choosing how I want to inhabit myself that day.

Something bright and sparkling. Something warm and edible. Something woody and mysterious. Something that smells like sunlight, or skin, or fruit split open in summer, or a place I've never been but somehow remember.

For a while, I thought perhaps the goal was to find the one. A signature scent. The fragrance people would eventually associate with me. My olfactory calling card.

But the more fragrances I fall in love with, the less interested I am in choosing just one.

Because I am not just one thing.

There are scents that make me feel playful. Others make me feel sensual. Some make me feel soft. Interesting. Grown. Unbothered. Alive. There are fragrances that feel like certain seasons of my life and others that seem to belong to a version of me I haven't completely met yet.

Perhaps that is part of the pleasure too.

Not simply recognizing who I am, but discovering how many ways there are to be her.

And every once in a while, I find one that makes me keep bringing my wrist back to my nose throughout the day, quietly delighted with myself.

Those are my favorites.

The ones that feel less like something I've put on and more like something I've uncovered.

I've been thinking lately about the shape of a life... How easily we inherit ideas about what one is supposed to look like.

But perhaps a life takes its truest shape there...in those small moments of recognition. The preferences and pleasures and peculiar little loves that accumulate quietly over time until, without realizing it, we've drawn an outline all our own.

Mine happens to include perfume.

A bottle among many on my shelf. A few sprays against warm skin. Something invisible moving with me through the day.

And every so often, I catch myself in the air.

Oh.

There you are..

There are shapes for womanhood. Shapes for success. Shapes for marriage and motherhood, beauty and ambition, home and happiness. So many ready-made outlines waiting for us to step inside them.

And perhaps some of them fit.

But I wonder how much of becoming ourselves is simply paying close enough attention to notice when they don't.

To notice what actually stirs us.

What makes us linger.

What we reach for again and again without anyone having to tell us that we should.

The things that make us feel inexplicably, unmistakably more like ourselves.

They may not be the things we expected.

They may not even be things other people can see.
